Announcement for the Award
A total of 20 books were nominated/recommended for 2008 and 2009 Awards, eight for 2008 Award and 12 for 2009 Award. The following two books were short listed for final selection for 2008 Award; Representing Children: Power, Policy and the Discourse on Child Labour in the Football Manufacturing Industry of Pakistan by Ali Khan and Harnessing and Guiding Social Capital for Rural Development by Shahrukh Rafi Khan, Zeb Rifaqat, and Sajid Kazmi.
Three books were short listed for the 2009 Award. They included Replicating Dreams: A Comparative Study of Grameen Bank and its Replication, Kashf Foundation, Pakistan by Nabiha Syed, Water Supply in Karachi: Issues and Prospects by Noman Ahmad and Participatory Rural Development: Experience of Rural Support Programmes by Mahmood Hasan Khan.
A Selection Committee comprising Drs Dr. M. Azam Chaudhary and Dr. Asim Sajjad Akhter reviewed the two books and unanimously selected Representing Children: Power, Policy and the Discourse on Child Labour in the Football Manufacturing Industry of Pakistan by Ali Khan for the 2008 Award.
Another Selection Committee consisting of Drs. Pervez Zamurrad Janjua and Asad Sayeed reviewed the three books shorted listed for the 2009 Award. As one reviewer recommended Mahmood Hasan’s book while the other put his weight behind Noman Ahmad’s book, COSS keeping in view strengths and weaknesses of the two books considered that the Award ought to go to Noman Ahmad’s book Water Supply in Karachi: Issues and Prospects.
The Council of Social Sciences, Pakistan with financial support of National Rural Support Programme conferred Dr. Akhter Khan Memorial Award of Rs. 50,000 each, for the years 2008 and 2009 on two books in a ceremony held at International Islamic University, Islamabad on October 25, 2010. Since it was not possible to present the Award in the year 2009, the presentation included awards for the years 2008 and 2009.
The Award winning book for the year 2008 was adjudged as the best book on social science published in Pakistan in the area of poverty and its alleviation while the book for the year 2009 was regarded as best book on social sciences in the area of rural/urban development.
COSS has established the Award in memory of the renowned social worker and social scientist late Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan with donations from National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), Mr. Nasim Yousaf, nephew of Dr. Khan and some admirers of Dr. Khan. The Award is given to the best book by a Pakistani author published during a financial year (July to June) written in any of the following fields (i) rural/urban development (ii) peace (iii) poverty and its alleviation, and (iv) gender discrimination.
