Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies: "Journalist in Residence" - a program for science journalists

The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) offers experienced journalists with focus on scientific journalism a three-month to six-month paid stay that is to start in January 2014. The program “Journalist in Residence" enables journalists to deal in depth with different research topics, without the pressure of daily business. The stay is endowed with 5,000 euros per month.

The journalists have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with several areas of research depending on their interests, and to deepen their knowledge in these fields without the pressure of daily business. Another objective of the program is to encourage the dialogue between journalists and researchers. The daily contact with the researchers will help journalists to gain a better understanding of the way research works and of the researchers’ way of thinking.

The grant is targeted at freelance and staff journalists, focusing on scientific journalism, with several years of work experience. Print and online media journalists are as welcome as radio and TV journalists.

Activities during the stay include:

* mutual exchange with the researchers at HITS and collaborating institutions

* public presentation and an internal seminar on science communication

* preparation of publications on some of the research projects (not mandatory)

Applications should include a proof of journalistic work in the area of Science and Technology; a presentation of the key areas of your journalistic work and a rough plan for the stay at HITS; a CV, and up to five relevant work samples. For staff journalists, a letter of recommendation from the chief editor or a head of section is also required. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is expected. At least basic knowledge of German is recommended.

Please submit your application via e-mail only. The deadline for applications is 15 September, 2013.

The Kaete Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research invites applications for fellowships starting in April 2014. The Centre is calling for people working on „Culture“ as a limit and/or a resource for global cooperation.

The Centre is interested in the following questions:
  • What has, historically, been the role of cultural change for global cooperation? Does ‘time’ (for instance as experience of acceleration) have an effect on cooperation? Were there periods of change in regard to global cooperation that reflect different levels of organisations (such as villages, nation-states)? What can we ‘learn’ from those experiences for a better understanding of global cooperation in the 21st century?
  • Does ‘cooperation’ have the same meaning in different cultural settings? What are the implications of different historical meanings for global cooperation in the 21st century?
  • How can we understand and explain the proliferation of supralocal and supranational „we-identities“, their inscription into cosmopolitan norms, rules and citizenship regulation?
  • How do cultural differences and diversity interfere in international bargaining processes and situations (global challenges – universal rules vs. universalised rules – cultural references)? Do new technologies have an effect on rules of international diplomacy? In how far does the meaning and importance of cultural diversity have an impact on nation-, democracy-, and peacebuilding operations?

Invited are applicants from behavioural sciences, anthropology, social sciences, history as well as cultural studies, but also practitioners from governance and non-governmental organisations, social movements and networks who would like to discuss their experiences in an academic framework.

The Centre looks in particular for researchers who are interested in:
a) trans- and interdisciplinary research
b) critical and culturally diverse perspectives on global cooperation
c) innovative methodological approaches and experimental ways to do and discuss their research.

Deadline of application is 20 August 2013.
